Not to be dramatic or anything, but choosing a color scheme for your space is kind of a make or break decision. Color can set the whole tone of the room; it's the head honcho which all the other design decisions refer back to – so it's important to get it right. To help with that, let me introduce ColorSnap Visualizer: a mobile app that claims to have the power to help you 'make your best color decisions yet'. As part of our App Review series, I'm taking time out to do a thorough road test of this virtual color connoisseur to help you decide whether it's worth the (free!) download. Read on for more.
Color Matching With Images
The big selling point of this app is the ability to match any image from your phone with colors from the Sherwin-Williams paint catalog. That means you can finally replicate the paint choices of that dreamy rustic-inspired bold blue and seafoam green kitchen you fell in love with whilst perusing the NONAGON.style gallery last week.
The process couldn't be any easier. Simply follow the instructions to upload the image in question.
Then tap the circle graphic of the color you're in lust with to find the name and color swatch number of an almost identical shade from the Sherwin-Williams range.
You can even see how the chosen color would look on a real wall – just click on the room image in the bottom right hand corner to see how the color fares as a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and even exterior paint choice.
Coordinating Color Palettes
An unexpected extra with this app is the option to find shades which are complementary to the color you love.
Here, to match my chosen ‘Blueblood', the app suggests ‘Pure White', ‘Otter' and ‘Polvo de Oro' as a complementary color palette. This will be a huge help when it comes to choosing furniture to fill your space. No clashing eyesores here!
Saving and Sharing
Did you get lost in a cycle of color mania and forget to note down all of those pretty colors? Rss menu 2 7 4 full. Not to worry, the app automatically saves the color palettes of each image you've uploaded, so there's no need to repeat the process again.
The app also gives you the option to ‘share' your chosen color, making it easy to keep your friends, family or interior designer informed of your current color preferences.
Pinterest Compatible
Perhaps you fell in love with your dream color whilst scrolling through our Pinterest page?
Well good news, this app is Pinterest compatible which means instead of choosing to upload an image from your phone, you can instead opt to ‘Match a Pin' and follow the process as per usual.
Final Thoughts
The Good
I'm all about taking cues from real life inspiration, so I really like how its color matching tool helps me mimic the interior aesthetics of my favorite #interiorgrams.

I'm also enthused by the complementary color finder. Sometimes I'll see a vibrantly colored sofa or rug in a store, but I'd be unsure of how to actually style it in my own space. By uploading an image of the piece, finding its exact color match and then using the app to source complementary shades, I can really see how ColorSnap Visualizer could at least point me in the right direction of how to make it work.
The Bad

Perhaps the only downside is the fact that you are limited to Sherwin-Williams paint colors, which means you're probably not going to get the exact same shade as in your uploaded photo.

Nevertheless, their catalog is extensive, so you're likely going to find at least one similar shade that will satisfy your color dreams.
Final Verdict
Overall, choosing a color scheme for your space is, in my opinion, the most difficult interior design decision to make – especially if you're not an interior design professional. As such, a free app that helps push you in the right direction is a download no-brainer. Heck, I'd probably download this app again even if it weren't free because I think it's that good.
